Health Out of the comfort zone

This read is going to make you itch: Demodex

As I was randomly surfing websites today, clicking link upon link, I came upon an article about Demodex follicorum and Demodex Brevis. It was quite interesting, really, but also somewhat disturbing. If you don’t feel like reading something which is going to make you itch…click to another blogpost I wrote RIGHT NOW!

OK, so you are brave. Are you sure?
OK, here goes.

Basically, Demodex folliculorum and Demodex Brevis are both species of Demodex, which is a genus (like a umbrella brand of species) of mites. (Itchy yet?) These little mites live in the hair follicles of mammals.

Now, the Demodex folliculorum and Demodex Brevis are particularly fond of humans. These little (less than half a millimeter big) mites just love to take up ressidence in facial hair, such as eyelashes, eyebrows and near the nose. According to some research, about 1/3rd of people is host to these little bugs, while some other studies claim EVERYBODY has them.

Surely, you are itching by now?

It gets worse. They come out at night, and walk around on your face, reaching a top speed of up to 16 cm/hour. The itchy feeling worsens. While they are out, they eat skin cells, and sebum (a sort of oil the human body produces). They also mate in the follicles (yes, there’s an orgy going on on your face while you are asleep) and they lay their eggs in your skin.

Man, this itch is really growing on me right now. I cannot go on. Instead, if you want to learn more, you are:

Anyway, I am going to bed. Probably laying awake all night. Either that, or I am going to have a nightmare…
