Life

Man is an outside creature.

It’s strange, but every year around this time, I come to realize something. And every year, it feels like a new insight. Despite the fact that we all know it. Even if we don’t know we know it, we know it.

Us people, we aren’t meant to sit in an office and stare at a screen all day. We aren’t meant to sit inside all day. We’re supposed to be outside. We’re supposed to be hunting, fishing, foraging, or farming.

Our most natural tool isn’t Excel, nor SPSS. Our instruments aren’t Apple or Smartphones. We’re meant to work with our body, aided with our minds. Not the other way around.

Getting outside

Yes, you guessed it. Weather has improved over here. The sun is practicing for next summer, rains have taken a break. The garden is starting to come to live again (and so are the weeds).

Luckily, my tasks for this week allowed me to work from home the last few days. Which means that I don’t finish work before 11pm, because I keep taking long breaks in between to go outside.

There isn’t much hunting going on for me, but my garden sure needs some work. So I’ve been plowing, I have been pruning, I have been tilling and I have been clearing. And I have also been planning and tending my seedlings. I’ve started later this year, to give my soil some time to recover and have a later harvest. See how that goes.

Gardening rejuvenates

While I’ve been doing a LOT more than during the months before, I feel rejuvenated. Nothing helps recovering from work stress than physical labour, especially in outside.Β  My days have been longer in hours, but they feel shorter. However, this blog has kinda suffered from it. Sorry guys πŸ˜‰

And indeed, I have -again- realized I am not meant to spend my days stuck in a cubicle. That sure is something to keep in mind while looking for other jobs. I expect that jobhunt will begin soon, as my manager will probably be arranging The Talk somewhere in the next two weeks. After all, my current contract is expiring soon.

But I am not worrying about that. Instead, I’ll be outside.

We are hunter gatherers by design and evolution. Sitting at a desk all day is awful for our mind and bodies. But it is a system we are all trapped in!
